The Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Prof. James Momoh was inducted in the United States National Academy of Engineering, NAE on Sunday, October 4, 2020.
Announcing his induction, the NAE President, John Anderson, affirmed that Prof. Momoh was the only Sub-Saharan African on the 2020 list consisting of 86 new members and 18 international members, bringing the total U.S. membership to 2,309 and the number of international members to 281.
James Momoh joined the elite and prestigious group of the National and International peers of engineers with distinguished innovations and contribution to engineering with his election into the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This is in recognition of his development of the Electric Grid Optimization Technique, Implementation of Advanced Technology, and Policy for Engineering Electric Grids in Africa.

James Adeche Momoh, a Professor of Electrical Engineering with Howard University, USA is the Chairman/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
An Academic of no mean feat, Prof. Momoh is a native of Igarra, Edo State, who had a Federal Government of Nigeria Full Scholarship Award studied for his Masters in Electrical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh and PhD at Howard University.
Academy membership honours those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”
Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The ballot is set in December and the final vote for membership occurs during January. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.
Momoh is a recipient of several awards including the US Presidential Award, Best Teacher Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE); Excellence Award from the US Senate Energy Committee for developing fast computational tools for addressing Pacific West Power System Stability Problems.
Momoh has been honoured with the Outstanding Scholarship Award at Howard University Faculty Senate. He has published nine textbooks on the modern power system and over 300 published journal articles.
He is a recipient of 25 fellowships, honours and awards including Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE); Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow of the Nigeria Academy of Engineering (FAEng) and Fellow of the Academy of Science (FAS), numerous awards and membership of professional associations and societies.
