Worried by the alarming rate of drug abuse in Nigeria, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) said it is working on a proposal for the establishment of National Rehabilitation Centre for Drug Abuse to be presented to both the legislative and executive arms of the Federal Government.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in our drive to eradicate drug abuse and misuse in Nigeria”, President of PSN, Ahmed Yakasai said on Tuesday.
He stated this while inaugurating the Pharmacy Advisory Board which comprises past Presidents of the society and board of fellows.
No fewer than nine past Presidents including Pa Akinkugbe, the oldest Past President of the society who marked his 89th birthday today attended the inauguration of the board saddled with the responsibility of handling conflicts between individual pharmacists and inter-agency conflicts.
The board is chaired by Prince Julius Adelusi- Adeluyi.
Yakasai also called on the Federal Government to immediately constitute the Governing Councils of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) and NAFDAC.
He said this would enable them perform optimally in terms of drug distribution and discipline to meet the full complement of their statutory mandates.
Yakasai said the governing councils would also enhance the work of the Pharmacy Advisory Board.
According to him, the board members would deploy their vast experience and influence to guide the organized pharmacy in Nigeria.
“In addition, the character and characteristics of Prince Julius Adelusi – Adeluyi who is the chairman of this board speak volume of the huge difference the Pharmacy Advisory Board can make in conflict resolution, discipline and uplifting our noble profession going forward”, he said.
