It was with joy that residents of the largest commercial city in Nigeria, Lagos welcomed the arrival of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC). EKEDC came into existence when Nigeria’s power sector was un- bundled and privatized in 2013. An offshoot of the legacy government utility NEPA, the company is one of the largest among the 11 electricity distribution companies serving the country today.
In October 2020, Eko Disco achieved a technological landmark by becoming the first electricity distribution company to launch the Supervisory Control and Data.
EKEDC was incorporated in Nigeria in 2013 as a public liability company to take over electricity distribution activities and related businesses of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in these licensed areas, which are segmented into 11 districts – Lekki, Ibeju, Islands, Orile, Ijora, Apapa, Mushin, Festac, Ojo, Ajah and Agbara.
The reforms of the Power holding sector has effectively helped the company supply power to the southern part of Lagos State and the Agbara community in Ogun State. Receiving between 11 and 15 percent of the total energy allocation from the national grid, the Company procures bulk electricity from Akangba, Ajah and Ikeja West transmission stations.
After getting its license in 2013, residents under EKEDC’s jurisprudence have enjoyed the successes of the company. Some say it has replicated the successes and achievements the telecommunication sector has attained.
True to its mission, the company has improved the quality of life for all customers and stakeholders by utilising cutting-edge technology and innovative processes, to sustainably, reliably and safely supply electricity.
EKEDC has proved to be a success as it has justified its license and monopoly to distribute electricity to the affected people. The supply of power has improved tremendously since the present MD, Tinuade Sanda met EKEDC. EKEDC, unlike some of its counterparts, has never been concerned with bill collection, as it considers that fingers are not equal.
The company has also engaged customers under its various districts. Dr. Tinuade Sanda has ensured constant engagement with customers regularly. This has helped in putting the company on the same page with its customers. The company has done many things to alleviate the plight of residents. The malaise witnessed in the past is no more there.
Despite different militating factors, EKEDC has taken meaningful steps to move the power supply forward.
EKEDC, under Tinuade Sanda, runs with the sole realities of the times we find ourselves in. Considering the economic outlook, which is affecting inadequate power supply, EKEDC has made provisions for cashless payment of electricity units for its customers. Its constant supply of electricity has aided small-scale businesses that can’t afford alternative sources of power, further strengthening small-scale ventures.
Eko Disco has a track record of excellent performance in the sector, particularly in the distribution space. This ranges from top-notch delivery of customer service to reliable power supply to its customers. In October 2020, Eko Disco achieved a technological landmark by becoming the first electricity distribution company to launch the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition – Distribution Management System (SCADA-DMS) in Nigeria. Hence, the Company consistently receives top ratings from the regulator of the industry, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
