The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Lagos State chapter, has debunked the information flying around in the state that voter’s registration would end on January 31, 2018.
In a statement on Friday by the Head of Publicity, INEC, Lagos State, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, he said that the exercise would only be suspended 60 days to the commencement of the 2019 general elections.
He said, “It has come to the notice of the commission in Lagos State of the rumours going round that the Continuous Voter’s Registration would end on January 31, 2018.
“We, therefore, wish to inform the people that the exercise is still on. In line with the provision of Section 9(5) of the Electoral Act (as amended), the Continuous Voter’s Registration Exercise will be temporally suspended 60 days to the commencement of the general elections scheduled for February 2019.
“All eligible voters in the state who have not registered before are encouraged to register at all INEC offices in the 20 local government areas in the state and other officially designated areas within the state between 9 am and 3 pm from Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.”
The statement added that residents who had registered between the first and second quarters of 2017 should check the INEC website, www.inecnigeria.org, to ascertain their voter status.
Also, the commission said in response to the citizens’ plea to have centres closer to their residence, it had developed a rotation plan for some of the centres within the registration areas/wards in each of the local government areas.
