Former Akwa Ibom State governor Senator Godswill Akpabio has resigned as Nigerian senate’s minority leader.

Akpabio’s resignation came days after he left the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Senator Akpabio thanked the Senate leadership, the minority leadership, all distinguished Senators, his party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the opportunity to lead the PDP Caucus in the last three years,” Akpabio said in a statement signed by his media aide, Jackson Udom

He also confirmed reports of his defection to the APC.

“Senator Akpabio is expected to be received into the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a rally in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday, August 8, 2018.”

Although the Senate President Bukola Saraki is the leader of the Nigerian senate, Akpabio’s letter was addressed to deputy minority leader Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, with a copy sent to Saraki.
