TCN Energizes the Brand New Damaturu Transmission Substation

In line with the Buhari administration’s policy on incremental power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully completed the brand new 330/132kV transmission substation in Damaturu, Yobe State. The contract for the substation was awarded to a local contractor in 2006 with the normal completion period of 18 months, but due to the poor capacity, the project suffered unprecedented delays and variations. In view of TCN’s pursuit of grid expansion, it refused to again extend the contract which had in fact expired long ago. Instead, it handed over the completion of the project to TCN task team about two months ago for completion. The team completed the 330kV side of the substation two weeks back.

According to the statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, TCN said that the new substation which comprises 150MVA 330/132kV and 60MVA 132/33kV power transformers is expected to greatly improve the quantity and quality of electricity supply to the following communities who are customers of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), Gaidam, Buni Yagi, Buni Gari, Ngamdu, Baimari, Yunusari Damaturu Metropolis and environs.

The statement further revealed that prior to the successful completion of the new Damaturu Transmission Substation, electricity voltage to Damaturu and environs was poor, due to very long 33kV distribution line from the Potiskum 132kV Substation. As a result, the distribution infrastructure from Potiskum was unable to guarantee four hours of electricity daily o the area. The narrative will, however, change with the new 330/132/33kV Damaturu Transmission Substation.

TCN noted that several projects are currently on-going in its network nationwide and re-affirmed its resolve to continue to pursue and implement the incremental power policy of the Federal Government, by consistently investing in capacity expansion initiatives through its Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Program. Lastly, TCN wishes to use this opportunity to thank the Honourable Minister of Power Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, for providing the needed leadership under which TCN has continued to achieve these laudable milestones.
