The Leadership of Isoko North Local Government Area on Saturday pledged to ensure equity in the distribution of food items donated by Delta Government as part of measures to cushion the effect of COVID-19 induced lockdown on the people.
Chairman of the Local Government Council, Mr Emmanuel Egbabor, gave the assurance while receiving the items at Ozorro.
The food items were 520 bags of rice, 260 bags of beans and 780 cartons of Indomie noodles.
He explained that the intention of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration was to ensure that those who couldn’t afford to feed themselves as a result of the stay-at-home directive were attended to.
He warned against any act that could bring shame and embarrassment to the local government, adding that Ward leaders who failed to adhere to the directives would be sanctioned.
“We appreciate Gov.Ifeanyi Okowa for putting up this food bank for our people and as you can see, I and other leaders here have been on ground to ensure that the items are distributed as instructed from the state.
“As a Committee, our role is to ensure that the items get to the very vulnerable in our various communities and we have advised Councillors and Presidents-General of communities to ensure that the right thing is done.
“This is imperative because they would be held liable for any problems emanating from their communities,” he said.
Also speaking, Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Tim Owhefere, said that the government’s decision to provide the palliatives for the people was a wonderful development worthy of commendation.
He urged the people to be orderly during the sharing and to watch out for only those who were less-privileged.
“We have Presidents-General and leadership of the various communities in our local government here. This is so because sharing the items is community-based and not political.
“So every community must feel the impact of being here because the Governor has so directed that it should not be shared along political lines but communal-base, especially to the vulnerable,” Owhefere said.
Other leaders present at the event ncluded Commissioner for Transport, Mr Oviemuno Oghoore; DESOPADEC Commissioner, Dr Paul Oweh and Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural and Community Development, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Okoro.
