Family of Obiamaka Ngozichukwu Orakwue, the 14 Year-Old girl who was raped to death by hoodlums in the Abule-Ado area of Lagos are calling for swift investigations and prosecution of the masterminds of the dastardly act.
Information had it that the hoodlums who numbered about five had gained access into the family house of the Orakwues’ on July 10th, 2017. Obiamaka was home alone as her both parent had gone to work and her other siblings had traveled to her uncle’s house for the holiday.
Our correspondent gathered that the suspects who were teenage boys had pounced on the Anambra born who had screamed for help that came too late. A neighbour (name withheld), who saw the suspects scaling the fence out of the Orakwues’ compound had taken them for thieves not knowing they were on a dangerous mission.
The neighbour had called Mrs. Orakwue who had gone to work to quickly inform her of the suspicious movement. She was said to have rushed back home about 30 minutes later but it was too late as Obiamaka had been serially raped and left to die.
According to Mrs Orakwue who managed to tell the bitter story, “I was at work when I got a call from our neighbour that they saw some boys jumping out from the fence of our compound and that my daughter was not responding to the knock on the gate since it was locked from inside.
“I was worried because my daughter was the only one at home and her other siblings were on holidays at my elder brothers place in Lekki “On getting to the house, I opened the gate with my spare key and dashed into the room only to find my daughter gasping for breath in the pool of her blood. “so much blood was gushing out from her private part and I asked her what happened and all she could mutter was, “Mummy…those boys I told you about”…, When asked about the (boys), Mrs Orakwue who burst into tears said that her daughter complained about some boys who had made advances towards her when she came back on holidays from school just recently but she rebuffed them and they swore to teach her a lesson of her life.
“It must have been the same boys that took advantage of the fact that I and my husband went to work and gained entry into the compound through the back fence of the house where they attacked my daughter,” she said.
The deceased who was rushed to a nearby private hospital by her mother and a few neighbours was confirmed dead almost immediately they got to the hospital.
The father of the deceased Mr Obinna Orakwue who could not hide his emotions lamented that enough was not being done to find out those behind the demise of his daughter.
“We have reported the incident to the police and they promised to apprehend the culprits but we still have not heard from them till date.” He described his daughter as an intelligent student with a very bright future. “She was meant to be in JSS 3 by the next academic session.
We told her to join her siblings in my in-law’s house but she insisted she wanted to stay at home to help with the house chores especially since I and my wife were away at work. Now see what has happened.
I leave it in the hands of God to judge”, he said. The alleged suspects it was gathered usually gather at a shop not too far from the family house of the deceased, where they smoke Indian hemp and harass young girls at will.
Obiamaka has however been laid to rest since July 21st 2017, while her killers are yet to be tracked by the Lagos State Police Command. A family friend to the Orakwues’ also took to her Facebook page to lament the death of the deceased.
According to Okonkwo Cynthia Algoma, “Today is first time of visiting a cemetery, those guys that raped you and killed you will not go like that, Obi mummy God of vengeance will fight for you,go well Obiamaka.”
