Former Super Eagles goalkeeping coach, Ike Shorunmu, has claimed that Odion Ighalo retired from international football, because of long distance flights.
Ighalo announced his decision hours after he helped Nigeria clinch bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament he emerged top scorer with five goals.
It also came after John Obi Mikel confirmed he was hanging his boots.
“The case of Mikel was not so much of a surprise, unlike that of Ighalo, who I felt could still carry on till 2022.
“I think the difficulty of travelling a long distance from China to Nigeria may have caused him to think about ending his national team duties.
“He is getting older and the chances of getting injuries are higher. That can be made worse with long-distance flights from China,” Shorunmu told Sporting Life.
