Nemanja Matic has picked up Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award for March, following his stunning stoppage-time strike in the Reds’ 3-2 win over Crystal Palace.
The Serbian midfielder took aim with his left foot from 25 yards with an unstoppable half-volley, which flew past Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey and won the game for the Reds, who had trailed 2-0 at Selhurst Park before goals from Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku pulled it back to 2-2.
Matic’s spectacular effort was one of eight strikes shortlisted in our poll on ManUtd.com, and received an overwhelming 59 per cent of the final vote.
A fine finish from Alexis Sanchez in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Swansea City came second (19 per cent) and Marcus Rashford’s delightful opener in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool was a close third (16 per cent).
Also nominated were goals from James Garner and Nishan Burkart in the Dallas Cup, Joe Riley’s curler against Liverpool in the Under-23s, and a pair of strikes from Burkart and Mason Greenwood for the Under-18s.
But Matic’s memorable first United goal proved to be a worthy winner of the accolade. After his stunner at Palace, he also went on to score a header to seal United’s 2-0 win over Brighton in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford, later in March.
Congratulations, Nemanja, and thanks to everybody who voted.
