The new Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Country Representative, Dr Wondimagegnehu Alemu, in an effort to strengthen the longtime partnership between both bodies.
The DG, who was in company with the directors of the drug regulatory agency, described WHO as the “only health organisation in the world that can feel the pulse of every country’s health system” and said that she was passionate about its work.
She also unveiled some priority areas of NAFDAC. They include improving services of laboratories in the Oshodi and Yaba areas of Lagos State to meet international standard in order to qualify for the WHO accreditation, the training of members of the staff of the agency and improving customer service relationship between the agency the Nigerian public, among others.
Recognising the important of partnership and collaboration between NAFDAC and WHO, Prof. Adeyeye urged WHO to continue to provide support to the agency, especially in assisting Yaba Laboratory to meet WHO prequalification.
Responding to the request of the DG, Alemu acknowledged the close working relationship between the organisation and NAFDAC. “WHO has been closely working with NAFDAC to build the capacity of its staff; monitoring of medicines, instituting quality control measures and ensuring post marketing standard procedures are followed. We will continue to work on these areas of collaboration and explore other areas where WHO can add value to the work of NAFDAC,” Alemu said.
