Mr. Olumide Akpata, a Senior Partner at Templars, one of the leading Commercial Law firms in Nigeria, has won the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election in a landslide.
The outer bar candidate, who coalesced a coalition against the Bar establishment, polled 9, 891 votes to defeat Dr. Babajide Ajibade, SAN, who polled 4, 328 votes and Julius Adesina, SAN, who scored 3, 982 votes.
It is the first time in over three decades that the president of the NBA will be emerging from outside the rank of senior advocates, an elitist group of lawyers who had argued that the Bar Presidency is exclusive to them.
Akpata, who will serve for a two-year-term, won by 54.3 percent of the total votes cast.
