The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Alhaji Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, on Wednesday, unveiled Phase One of FAAN’s Sustainable Waste Management Programme at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The initiative, which introduces indoor colour-coded waste recycling bins across the terminals, marks the first phase of a three-stage programme aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, reducing waste and aligning Nigeria’s airports with global best practices.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Honourable Minister commended FAAN’s management for introducing the initiative, noting that it reflects the Authority’s commitment to cleaner, greener and more sustainable airport operations.
In his remarks, Alhaji Ganduje praised the initiative as an innovative response to climate change and environmental challenges, urging stakeholders to support the programme.
Earlier, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, said the programme forms part of the Authority’s efforts to advance beyond Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme while laying the foundation for future waste-to-power initiatives.
She explained that the project will be implemented in three phases. Phase One involves the deployment of indoor colour-coded recycling bins; Phase Two will introduce outdoor collection bins across the airport ecosystem; while Phase Three will engage certified recycling firms to collect and process sorted waste, including plastics, glass, cans and organic waste.
Mrs. Kuku noted that the initiative is driven not only by environmental responsibility but also by sound business principles, as it will reduce waste, lower operational costs through recycling and support a circular economy.
She disclosed that following its launch at MMIA, the programme will be extended to other international airports across the country in the coming weeks, while calling on airport users and stakeholders to embrace proper waste segregation for a cleaner and greener airport environment.
