Twenty five years ago, Nigeria was a country starved of connection. Landlines were scarce and unreliable, and a phone call across town could take a whole afternoon of trying.  In May 2001, MTN made its first call from Maritime House in Apapa, and within the year, alongside two other operators, it turned the Nigerian Communications Commission’s GSM licensing into a working growing network.. Nobody fully grasped how large that change would become. Today, as MTN Nigeria marks 25 years of operations, the scale of what has been built is hard to overstate.

I joined as a foundation staff member in the Banking Channel Unit of the Sales and Distribution Department, so I saw firsthand how deliberately that early growth was engineered. The company’s task in those first years was not simply to sell phone lines. It was to get Nigeria’s banks, agents, and retailers to open their branches and their trust to an industry with no track record, and to move recharge cards and starter packs at a scale the market had never seen. That patient branch-by-branch, city-by-city work laid a foundation that most Nigerians using MTN will never think twice about, but it is the reason the network now reaches over 90 million people.

MTN’s “Everywhere You Go” promise was never just a slogan. It was a bet that Nigerians, given the tools, would build businesses, stay close to family, and find opportunity through a phone in their pocket. That bet has paid off many times over. MTN Nigeria now holds the largest share of the telecoms, and its investment in 3G, 4G, fibre, and the country’s first commercial 5G network has turned a voice-first product into the digital backbone of everyday Nigerian life. Businesses have been built on it, students have gained access to knowledge through it, and an entire generation of fintech, streaming, and social commerce has grown up because the connectivity was there to support it.

The Y’ello Street Exhibition opened in Lagos this year, tracing the company’s journey from those early recharge cards to today’s digital services, is a fitting way to mark the milestone. It is a reminder that MTN’s story has always been inseparable from Nigeria’s own story of digital transformation, from a country where mobile telephony was a luxury for the few to one where over 90 million people carry that connectivity in their pockets every day.

MTN Nigeria’s leadership has been clear that the next chapter is about closing the connectivity gap that still exists for millions of Nigerians, and about what Artificial Intelligence, fintech, and expanded digital infrastructure can make possible over the next 25 years. I have every confidence it will meet the challenge the same disciplined way it met the first one.

Congratulations to MTN Nigeria on 25 remarkable years, and to everyone, past and present, who helped build a network that changed how a nation connects.
