Governor of Delta and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated renowned author and historian, Professor Samuel Aghalino, on his election as President of Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN).

Aghalino, a Professor of Economic History at the University of Ilorin was elected President of the society at the 67th Annual Conference/Congress of the body held in Abuja.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, Okowa described Aghalino’s emergence as eminently deserving, adding that with his antecedents, the HSN was in safe hands.

The governor said that Aghalino had over the years proven his mettle in the academia as a cerebral scholar of history, celebrated public intellectual, accomplished administrator and widely-acclaimed consultant.

He urged him to bring his wealth of experience to bear not only in advancing the course of the society but also the academia in general.

He assured the HSN President that his administration would continue to partner relevant authorities for the realisation of his administration’s Stronger Delta agenda.

“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate our illustrious son, Professor Samuel Ovuete Aghalino, on your election as President of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN).

“As a member of NBA’s Legal Profession Regulation Review Committee (LPRRC), you contributed immensely to the reform of the profession, which birthed the Legal Profession Regulation Bill.

“And, as the pioneer and current Chairman of NBA Welfare Committee, you midwifed the NBA Law Pavillion Partnership, the NBA-NHIS scheme, and the NBA-Leadway Improved Life-Insurance scheme, making the welfare of lawyers a top priority.

“We recall your astute contributions to governance here in Delta when you served as Member of the Governing Board of the Delta State School of Marine Technology, Burutu, and Chairman Governing Council of the the Delta State College of Education Warri.

“Upon the establishment of three new universities in our state, you were again appointed as a member of the Governing Council, Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.

“As a Professor of Economic History you have made your mark, contributing to the development of the Niger Delta story and we can’t thank you enough.

“With your wealth of experience in the academia garnered over the years and as the outgoing Vice President of the Society, I have no doubt that the HSN will be in ‘safe hands’ with you,” Okowa stated.
