Nigeria has no shortage of banks. What it has a shortage of is banks that consistently do what they say they will do. Polaris Bank has spent the better part of the last five years proving it belongs in that smaller, more disciplined category, and the recognition has followed.

Polaris Bank Limited was established on September 24, 2018, following the revocation of Skye Bank’s operating licence by the Central Bank of Nigeria. From that starting point, the bank has grown into a network of over 260 branches across all states of the federation, backed by a digital infrastructure that has become one of the most decorated in the Nigerian financial services industry.

The centrepiece of that infrastructure is VULTe, the bank’s flagship digital banking platform, developed entirely in-house and launched in May 2021. VULTe allows customers to open accounts, transfer funds, access payday loans, pay bills, and manage their finances through a seamless omni-channel experience. Since its launch, the platform has earned Polaris Bank the BusinessDay BAFI Digital Bank of the Year award five consecutive times. No other Nigerian bank has matched that record. The bank equally won Best MSME Bank of the Year at the same awards for the fourth consecutive time in 2025, making it the only institution in Nigeria to hold both titles simultaneously across multiple years.

Under the leadership of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Kayode Lawal, the bank has continued to deepen its impact on the segments of the economy that need financial services the most. Lawal, who was appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria in January 2024, has maintained the bank’s digital-first focus while pushing its MSME agenda further into underserved communities. In July 2025, Polaris Bank co-launched a N1.5 billion fund for Nigeria’s creative economy in partnership with Woodhall Capital of the United Kingdom and the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, targeting professionals in the creative industries who have historically struggled to access financing. The bank has also built specific credit windows for women-led enterprises and youth entrepreneurs, groups that represent enormous untapped potential in Nigeria’s economy.

People are equally central to how Mr. Lawal runs the institution. In April 2026, the bank graduated 58 new hires from its Polaris Graduate Intensive Training and Polaris Tech Ignite Programme, a cohort selected from over 10,000 applicants. Addressing the graduates, Kayode Lawal was direct: continuous learning and adaptability are not optional in banking. They are the price of staying relevant.

Verifiably, the numbers and the awards tell one story, but the more important story is what Polaris Bank is building. An institution that develops its own technology, trains its own people, and deliberately designs products for the small business owner and the young creative is one that has made a clear choice about who it exists to serve.

Mr. Lawal has made clear that this focus will not change. With VULTe continuing to evolve, a growing MSME portfolio, and a talent pipeline that is already producing results, Polaris Bank is not simply competing in Nigeria’s digital banking space. It is helping to define it.
