Zenith Bank Plc has continued to grow its reputation as Nigeria’s most formidable financial institution, delivering a string of landmark results across profitability, international expansion, and service excellence that have drawn recognition from the world’s most respected banking authorities.
The bank’s track record of top-tier performance and shareholder reward remains unwavering. A record dividend of N10 per share, representing a 100 percent increase over the previous year, was declared for the 2025 financial year, totalling N410.69 billion. The bank has simultaneously deepened its pan-African presence and broadened its trade and transaction banking capabilities across key markets, reinforcing its identity as an institution that grows without losing sight of those who depend on it.
That identity is shaped by the breadth of Zenith Bank’s operations. With subsidiaries and representative offices spanning Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Sierra Leone, the Gambia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Kenya, the bank has built a cross-continental network that connects African businesses, diaspora communities, and institutional clients to financial markets across two continents.
This operational scale is matched by financial muscle. The bank closed the 2025 financial year with gross earnings of N4.19 trillion and a pre-tax profit of N1.26 trillion, sustaining the position it earned as the only Nigerian financial institution to record consecutive years of Profit After Tax exceeding N1 trillion. It carried that momentum into 2026, posting a first quarter pre-tax profit of N360.92 billion. It has retained the title of Nigeria’s biggest bank by Tier-1 Capital for the seventeenth year running, a consistency that few institutions anywhere on the continent have matched.
Steering the institution’s governance at Board level is its recently appointed Chairman, Engr. Mustafa Bello, who assumed the role on May 5, 2026, following the completion of founder Jim Ovia’s tenure. A civil engineer by training, a former Federal Minister of Commerce, and the former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, Bello’s resume spans decades of leadership across both public and private sectors.
His familiarity with Zenith Bank runs deep. Having served on its Board since December 2017, he chaired the Board Risk Management Committee and contributed to several others before his elevation to the top position. That institutional knowledge, paired with his broader experience navigating regulatory and investment environments, positions him to oversee the bank’s governance with the rigour its scale demands.
Driving the bank’s day-to-day ambitions is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, whose appointment in June 2024 made her the first woman to lead Zenith Bank in its thirty-five-year history. Her approach to banking is built on a clear conviction: that financial institutions exist to remove barriers between customers and their goals, not to create them.
Dr. Umeoji has channelled that conviction into every layer of the bank’s operations. Her academic formation across Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School, Wharton, and MIT Sloan, anchored by close to three decades of experience within Zenith Bank itself, equips her with both the strategic range and the institutional depth to execute on that vision. Under her watch, the bank completed a N614.65 billion hybrid capital raise, commissioned the Zenith Bank Paris operation, and directed the launch of the Manchester Operation in the United Kingdom alongside new subsidiaries in Cote d’Ivoire and Kenya. The customer experience that results from this leadership is one that has drawn global attention.
International Banker named Zenith Bank its Best Customer Service Provider in Africa for 2026, while Global Finance recognised it as the Best FX Provider in Nigeria the same year. Digital upgrades across the bank’s platforms have improved transaction speed and reliability, and the bank’s cybersecurity investments have strengthened the infrastructure millions of customers rely on daily. Internally, Dr. Umeoji implemented an unprecedented salary increase and oversaw promotions for 80 percent of the bank’s entire workforce across her first two years, treating staff welfare as a direct input into the quality of service customers receive.
Zenith Bank’s sense of responsibility extends well beyond its branch network. The bank has maintained active support for small and medium enterprises across Nigeria through accessible credit products and financial advisory services, recognising that the prosperity of Nigerian businesses and that of the institution are bound together.
This community orientation is reinforced through sponsorships, financial literacy drives, and long-standing investment in grassroots economic development that keep the bank embedded in the daily lives of the customers it serves across the country.
With Engr. Bello providing strategic oversight and Dame Umeoji leading operational execution, Zenith Bank moves through the remainder of 2026 with a clear direction. The recently completed acquisition of Paramount Bank Kenya has further extended its East African footprint, and its growing presence in European markets continues to open corridors for African trade and investment that did not previously exist.
Euromoney’s decision to name Zenith Bank both “Africa’s Best Bank” and “Nigeria’s Best Bank” in 2026, the second consecutive year it has held both titles simultaneously, is less a verdict on one year’s performance and more a recognition of what happens when strategic discipline, customer focus, and institutional ambition are held together without compromise.
